T.M. Krishna Learn More T.M. Krishna T.M. Krishna is a renowned Carnatic music vocalist, speaker and writer on social and cultural issues. Born in Chennai into a family of musicians, Krishna has been performing since he was six years of age. He has trained under Vidvan Seetharama Sarma, Chingleput Ranganathan and the Padma awardee, Semmangudi Srinivasier. Krishna has also authored the books Voices Within: Carnatic Music — Passing on an Inheritance (2007), A Southern Music: The Karnatik Story (2013), Reshaping Art (2018) and Sebastian & Sons: A Brief History of Mrdangam Makers (2020). His partnership with the renowned Tamil writer, Perumal Murugan, has paved the way for bringing works of art onto the ‘classical’ stage. In 2016, Krishna received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in recognition of “his forceful commitment as artist and advocate to art’s power to heal India’s deep social divisions”. The following year, he received the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for his services in promoting India’s national integration.
